Sleepless Nights

Sleepless Nights

Do you ever have trouble sleeping? The last few nights, the pain in my hip has been so bad that I have hardly been able to get a good night’s rest. My dear husband Ken has been having to get up often in the middle of the night to turn me this way and that, in the hopes of finding a more comfortable position to relieve my pain. But some nights, the pain just doesn’t go away. And if I’m honest, it’s on nights like these that my thoughts can so quickly turn to despair.

But that’s when I recall the words of Psalm 63: “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.” Oh friend, chronic pain can make it so easy for fear to take hold of my mind, for despair to creep into my heart. But like the psalmist, I must remember that Jesus is with me; that He is my help and that His right hand will sustain me — no matter what the pain. And so, in the midst of the tossing and turning of thoughts, I lift up my prayers to the Lord and quietly recite the words to one of my favorite hymns:

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev’ry change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
Thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Perhaps you can relate. For you it may be an aching back, or maybe a terrible bout of the flu, or perhaps it’s a difficult situation in your family that has you up at night. If so, let me encourage you to turn your thoughts to Jesus, your ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). And then, let us know how we can pray for you. Be heartened, friend… The Lord is on your side.
