Growing Through Suffering

Growing up, I always thought disability was something that happened to other people. At the age of 17, never, ever did I imagine that I would end up in a wheelchair, without the use of my hands or feet. But it happened — a reckless dive threw me into a world of suffering for which I truly wasn’t ready. And I’m sure it’s happened to you… we all go about living our busy lives, when suddenly we’re hit broadside by suffering. Your elderly parent passes away, a pink slip is handed, your spouse betrays you, or you get that dreaded call from your doctor confirming your deepest fear. But while these hardships can appear to come out of nowhere, they are no surprise to our Lord.

Jesus said that in this world, we would have trouble and suffering (John 16:33). But He doesn’t just leave us there to deal with our trials on our own. No; rather, God reassures us in His Word that He is with us no matter what the hardship — hearing our every plea and drawing near to our broken hearts (Psalm 34); upholding us with His right hand (Isaiah 41:10); comforting us in all our troubles (2 Corinthians 1:4); and promising us a hopeful future (Jeremiah 29:11). It’s why I cling to God’s Word — especially in times of heartache or pain. And I encourage you to do the same by starting my free, 7-day Bible study of “Growing Through Suffering.” Whether you are currently going through a difficult time or your days are just peachy, these daily devotionals will surely help you draw nearer to Jesus and grow in Christ.
