Epiphany Day

Now that we’re in the month of January, most people are breathing a sigh of relief that Christmas is officially behind us — what with the upheaval in your schedule, blowing your diet, and maxing out your credit card. But in the church calendar, Christmas is far from over. I grew up in the Reformed Episcopal Church, which uses the ancient church calendar for worship celebrations throughout the year. And today is Epiphany Day — a celebration of when the three wise men came to visit Jesus. In Matthew 2, it says, “…When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.”

Oh friend, like the wise men, we too are to be overflowing with joy at the birth of our Savior. And while you and I may not have gifts of gold, frankincense or myrrh… surely, as an act of worship, we can give to Jesus our hearts. So celebrate the spirit of Christmas today and all year long, making Christ large in your heart and lifting up to the Lord your praise, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
