Danny’s Downs

I thought I knew every song by Peter, Paul and Mary, my favorite folk singers back in the 60’s – I memorized the words to so many songs they made famous, and as a fan, I can still recall the lyrics and tunes. But not this one, “Danny’s Downs” which appeared on their Flowers and Stones album in the 1990s. When I recently heard it, I fell in love with the words, and I think you will too.

Even though we’ve, in some ways, come so far in disability rights since this song was written, so many “advancements” prove to be thinly cloaked abuses. This is true especially of children diagnosed with disabilities while still in the womb. Yet studies show that expectant parents are more likely to make life-giving choices when they have the support of their community and the example of other parents raising a child with Down syndrome.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, so there’s no better time to share a few uplifting words with someone you know who cares for a child with Down syndrome. Who knows, maybe “Danny’s Downs” can be an anthem for them, too!
